Mono Kallax
Concept
Originally I wanted to wrap the whole room in aluminium foil for fun actually, luckily I didn’t. The project starts from the concept “for fun”. Back then, I didn’t really think of the reason for making a work. Like what is the concept, why picking the materials, why picking this colour scheme, none of these question matter to me. I do it only because I want, and I want to have fun and that’s the most important for me. But when I was wrapping all the stuff, I found out it is quite interesting to do a comparison between a world with colour and texture and a world with only one colour and one texture. After I finished taking the picture of the aluminium foil wrapped version, I found out it is very hard to tell if the picture is shot in black and white or shot in colour. And the texture of the objects actually makes the photo lively, while when it is only having angular texture, it is having a depressed feeling in some sense.
Colours and texture does matter in our daily life.
How I made it
I shot the left side not wrapped version Kallax first. I tried to put as much texture and colours on it as I can so I put clothes, glass bottle, Posca markers all of it on the cabinet to aim for a more significant contrast to the wrapped version photo. The placement of the objects are in precise position, so as to make it easier to shoot a nearly identical photo compare to the original one.
For wrapping, I try to make the surface as smooth as it is. Except for rounded corners like the bottle or uneven surface like the sweater, I tried to make it as smooth as it is. I hope there is as less distraction as possible and I thought aluminium foil with creases would be dazzling to see and the shape of the object would be altered, that’s why I ended up to make the surface as smooth as possible. Honestly, not a wise choice as aluminium foil is very fragile when you’re moving it around, and it gets ripped easily. But by the results, I am happy with it.
