Bloom Finale

Bloom Finale is the final project of the 4 years study of art programme. It acts more like a conclusion of the 4 years of study and it is the final experiment that I would like to do in the field of art shortly as I integrated all the elements that I love and medium that I am interested in one project.

The whole installation is made in quite a complicated way. It all starts by walking around the flower shop and getting the flowers that matches the research and aesthetic that I was looking for. In various research about flowers, it shows that there are 3 factors that made flowers to be appealing to people. In vision perspective, it is shown that blue and white are the most “attractive” colours for most of the people seeing flowers. And people are usually having preference towards the symmetrical flowers. Also, rose and lavender scent are found to be an ideal scent for aromatherapy to reduce stress for stressed people. So at first I try to look for flowers that are matching these criteria but these colours and factors are hard to make it to be an interesting vase, so I also bought other flowers to make it looks lively.

And then it is the shoot, its started from taking the flowers one by one under the sunlight which is the hardest one as the weather was not stable in Spring in Toronto. It can be having a snowstorm for 20 minutes and it will be sunny for half an hour and I have to take the time. After all the photos were taken, I will have to edit them and resize them to be the size I estimated that would look good on the vase. And I print them in 2 versions, one of them is how it looks like and the other one is flipped 180 degrees as I want to have photo on both sides so even audience are walking around it, it wouldn’t look weird. And apart from the intense shooting and cutting, choice of materials are also a problem. Choices of vases and the diffuser sticks took a long time to test and search to match the project the best. In total I tried 10 different vases to find the best combination, and diffuser stick is also a costly materials eventually. After the assemble of the flower prints and sticks, it comes to the layout. And the final touch is the mix of scent oil. I used mainly rose and lavender as the core scent, alongside with other oil for layering the scent. Including bergamot, cedar wood, patchouli.

This is a project that I would like people to physically come and visit to experience it. And scent play as a big part for the whole project which it is still something cannot be digitised and make the experience more unique compare to a work simply have visual and audio experience. I also wish these 3 flower bouquets can be a blessing that I sent to all the Class of 2025 friends in University of Toronto and wish you all to live a happy and healthy life.
